Interview with CARNAL TRASH

When I heard CARNAL TRASH for the first time I was immediately hooked! You know there are many (more or less) good bands out there, but it's hard to find a really special one! So for me there was no doubt if I would do this fuckin zine then the first interview of course has to be done with Christian Badia of CARNAL TRASH! So here we go...

⍰ You are already active with various projects for a few years now. Can you quickly sum up the projects/releases you worked on so far? Was there any particular reason that made you want to start playing? Did you ever made any attempts in forming a full band line-up?

➤ In 2014 i came up with the idea of doing a fast goregrind/gorenoise project that was called Abomination Against Humanity, this name was later changed to Human Atrocity. Then i did various "test" projects, such as Facial Mutilation, Intoxicated and Dysmenorrhea.

Carnal Trash started in mid 2015; I wanted to create some goregrind in the veins of Autophagia, Regurgitate or Active Stenosis. It started with the demo "Obliteration", a friend named Leo was on drums; Then he leaved and i changed the style to something like Regurgitate... then again in 2017 i went back to the original style once and for all.

My reason to start this was because i love this genre, i want to bring back the Old school goregrind that is lost by now. I dont have any ideas in forming a band, always liked to do my stuff alone, without other people´s opinions; unless someday i do a live show, then yes, a band is needed.

⍰ When looking at the development of grindcore from the mid 80ths up to now… what do you like about that? And what do you absolutely hate?

➤ The old school grindcore and every form of music was the best in the 80´s. There are so many great bands that moved this genre. I can say that my favourite grindcore release is From Enslavement To Obliteration by Napalm Death. What can i say about what i hate? the faggots who are creating nonsense shit with the genre, such as "Loligrind, Slam Goregrind, Cybergrind..." so many crap around lately that drives me mad, seriously, thanks to them the genre is failing to a joke... Even modern grindcore today is total useless crap (See modern Napalm Death for example). I also think that grindcore back then was made with such energy.. like it should be!

⍰ Generally speaking, what do you think is closer to the truth: “Grindcore is protest” or “Grindcore is fashion”? What does grind mean to you?

➤ Cant relate to any of them really... if i had to choose, i select "protest" but i dont care about that either; Grindcore to me is a way to express yourself against everything; its not about how cool you can play guitar, not about how heavy you are, its more like a personal thing... the "fashion" is for the posers of Black Metal for example.

⍰ You make many of your new demos and releases available on YouTube. What do you think about digital media? Do you collect tapes, vinyl, CDs?

➤ Yes i upload my noise to youtube often. I am absolutely ok with digital media, i would like to buy CD´s and everything from my favourite bands, but here in Argentina is really hard to buy or make negociations with other countries and Goregrind/Grindcore is NON existent here too;

⍰ What does D.I.Y. mean to you?

➤ The only definition i have for D.I.Y is Do It Yourself... like my friend Ioannis (Active Stenosis) told me... "goregrind is D.I.Y" and he is absolutely right at that.

⍰ Name five releases you recently discovered and what do you think about them?

➤ To be honest i havent discovered too much, but i can name a few.
Flatulence; that is a new Goregrind project of Vanya of Inopexia; btw really cool stuff!
Incinerated, one of the best worships to Mortician with Warsore-like style playing.
And your project Corpse Eater too, that i liked a lot.
and that it is... i am not listening or searching too much for new bands.

⍰ Thanks for taking the time for this interview! Maybe you want to drop a hint what we can expect from you in the future?

➤ Thanks to you Ron for this interview and the cool questions. I need to say thanks to those who made my logos.

Thanks to:
Graham Page for the Human Atrocity logo.
Leland Lawrence for the Carnal Trash logo and
Jay Beger for the Dysmenorrhea logo...

I´m working on a new Human Atrocity EP, and a split with Gruesome Bodyparts Autopsy for Carnal Trash; Stay brutal and long live to the good Goregrind/Grindcore!!!

RUBUFASO MUKUFO - "Violent Show 2017"

RUBUFASO MUKUFO was originally started by members of Cerebral Turbulency. They put out a few releases and I think split up around 2011. Earlier this year they reappeared with a new line-up. There’s not much information available but If I’m not mistaken then drummer Michal Cichý is the only remaining constant from the original line-up. One of the new members is no other than Bilos from Malignant Tumour on vocals who seemed to have regained some interest in the genre, which probably was due to their “goregrind gig” at Obscene Extreme festival that coincidentally happened around the same time. Let’s see if that interest is only a short-lived fashion... or not!?

I’m overall no big fan of the Czech bands style but this one is a heavy hitter! Great catchy riffs, no fuckin around with experimental genre breaking bullshit, just straightforward and fast paced shredding! The drumming is immediately recognizable and that’s one point when they sound little superior than your usual band. Bilos delivers some unique vocals here ranging from low grunts and yelling to pitch shifted pukes and distorted screams! For such kind of bands the production could always be a little more nasty for my taste but it’s still raw enough to enjoy!

RUBUFASO MUKUFO so far released this EP in digital form exclusively and I respect them for trying that route! Unfortunately people don’t seem to appreciate that move and so far I’m the only guy who went through with a purchase on their Bandcamp. But fuck people because they often got shitty elite opinions by judging a band on their release format, and instead rather buy a 3rd generation tape bootleg (on which a garbage truck first drove over). I hope the response so far doesn’t let them down too much because this is some promising shit!

CARNAL TRASH / SYMPTOMATIC EXHUMED - split

I read something along the line of “Goregrind in the vein of Autophagia” from the label that announced the release. I didn’t really expect anything though, but when I listened to it I couldn’t believe my ears! The riffs, the song structures, the vocals... it’s all there in its fullest glory! I never heard a band getting so close to that style! On top of that you’ll hear the best drum programming I have witnessed so far. Makes me wonder why you’d even need to find a real drummer for such kind of project, so really… fuck a drummer! The recording really sounds loud and powerful and in this case slightly different than Autophagia. But you won’t be able to (and probably don’t really want to) reproduce this sound anymore. It’s that untouched charm of the 90ths/early millennium era that isn’t really supposed to exist 15-20 years later. Anyway, Carnal Trash is for all those who never can’t get enough of this style, and now just want to hear some more “spastic goregrind”...

Sadly it’s quite a downfall to move on to the Symptomatic Exhumed tracks! I checked some other recordings of this project and they were quite good, but the recording quality on this one is so abysmal you can’t really bring yourself through it. Well I did anyway and for the sake of this review listened to this thing a good bunch of times. There’s a few goofy riffs here and there but otherwise the guitar work doesn’t sound all too bad, sometimes even very good! It’s a good mixture of crust, grind and maybe even some Mortician worshipping. It’s not really very noisy but it’s one catastrophic mix that makes the whole thing appear very poor. The guitars are so thin and low in the mix that you can’t barely hear them unless you turn the volume all up. If you do this, unfortunately you’re getting crushed by the movie intros, which are of course louder. The drum programming is probably alright but mixed really bad that at normal volume you can basically only hear cymbals and might only guess there’s some more to it. You can only hear the other parts of the “drum kit” if you turn up the volume all the way, so in the end same problem we had with guitars. Like I said before there’s other recordings I heard from this project during the same time period without those issues so I don’t really understand what happened here!? I can’t really believe this was done on purpose either? Maybe the guy’s been wasted as fuck and accidentally sent in a brutal rough mix??

If the Symptomatic Exhumed tracks had been done right this would be an awfully good split as I believe there’s a good potential in this project nevertheless! But in this case I can only leave a positive opinion on the Carnal Trash material.

FETAL DEFORMITY / 星际之门 - split

Fetal Deformity is a 3 piece from Mexico. It’s well done goregrind, nice raw sound, ideal song lengths, and you know... the full-package deal including movie samples (like the regurgitate scene in City of the living dead for the 1000th time) so expect nothing extra-ordinary here. I hate to say it but I enjoy the mid-tempo parts a bit more on this one as the vocals performed during those parts sound like regurgitated burrito farts - that’s really stupid as fuck but at the same time I love it! Ultimately this material is not bad at all and it’s entertaining to listen to and certainly a release I’ll be coming back once in a while, but it’s lacking a bit its own character to stand out from the rest. I doubt the band would give a fetal fuck about my opinion here as they are around for a couple years already, though.

The other band’s name on this release translates to “Stargate”, it’s otherwise also known as “CHAPPA´AI” which I learned is a term used for the stargate in the film series. No idea why an Hungarian band needs to write their name in Chinese characters but what the fuck do I know?? Well, I don’t know anything about the line-up either other that it’s featuring Marci from the one-man-band Parazitozis. So much for introduction, can I go now? Well, ohm, the actual sound… well it’s like a good mixture of noisecore and harsh noise. I’m not into harsh noise sounds a lot anymore but this one still feels comfortable to listen to, occasionally. I have heard worse stuff in that genre, so I’m pretty sure most people into harsh sounds like that will appreciate this one!

Bandcamp:

BURNING HAMMER - "Demo of death 2017"

Here's a filthy wrestling themed assault that sounds actually quite pleasant. If you know me then it’s not too hard to believe that I think wrestling fuckin' sucks!! The name obviously is adopted from a wrestling move too and there’s at least two other bands with the same name that put out releases during the last 2 years… Like it’s so fuckin’ difficult to run a quick name check on the usual sites!? But whatever, fuck this wrestling thing because in the end I'm usually only in it for the music so I couldn't care less. People are talking about "Morticianwave" here (another new term I hear a lot recently that I thought sounds quite sketchy) and it's certainly taking big influence here. However in the riffs there's also some crusty grind thing going on which melts fine into the whole mess. The band’s sound is completed with cancerous low vocals and primitive Neanderthal drum programming (someone’s got to do this Neanderthal thing right, okay?) but that's just part of the charm! The guy (or guys?) didn’t really fuck along too much here and just straightforward recorded as is. So you’ve got a perfect raw and authentic production and not overproduced like many bands these days that aren't even able to record themselves. Well done release, looking forward to hear more!!

Bandcamp:

RANCID ODOUR - “The Rancid Odour Of A Bloated Floater”

I heard people describe this one as “Gorenoise with real drums”. Well for me it just sounds like sloppy grind/noisecore with toilet vocals. In the end that’s probably the same, but judging from the cover artwork and logo color one might think otherwise, so just making sure you are still with me. It says there are 57 tracks in little over 6 minutes recorded by a guy called Tom from California. I didn’t count tracks but that numbers seems about right. It sounds like this was recorded in one take with feedback burning through your ears between each track. I like how the riffs are only adumbrated which gives the recording a nice 90ths noisegrind vibe. The vocals on the other side are a bit annoying as it’s mostly the same high pitched grunts throughout all tracks but I guess most people into pitch shifters will just love them for that! This release was already put out a while ago and I’m wondering if there’ll ever be more. That guy definitely knows his shit so one can only hope!!
